The DIET, Uttar Dinajpur has been established in the year 2006 in terms of the order of the State of West Bengal vide no. 692-SE (Pry)/4P-16/99 dated 27.07.2004. The District Institute of Education and Training, Uttar Dinajpur was established in accordance with the ‘Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Restructuring and Reorganisation of Teacher Education’, the Government of India by upgrading the Government Primary Teachers Training Institute, Tarangapur.

From the session 2012-2014, the DIET, Uttar Dinajpur got recognition from the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) to run the D. El. Ed course with in-take of 50 students alongwith the affiliation from the West Bengal Board of Primary Education. From the session 2017-2018, the Institute again got recognition of additional intake of 50 students for the D. El. Ed course. The D. El. Ed course in this Institute is completely residential for all students.
Since the establishment, the DIET, Uttar Dinajpur is working to enhance the quality in school education in the district through numerous programmes, activities and research.
The campus boasts of phenomenal academic-cum-administrative building, hostels (can accommodate 100 students), guest house, staff quarters, kitchen-dining, playground etc. At DIET Uttar Dinajpur, we aim at nurturing all our students, enabling them to grow academically and personally. Our team of dedicated educators and staff leave no stone unturned to ensure that DIET, Uttar Dinajpur remains at the forefront of educational invention.
